Critical Crossroads: GenAI and the Animation Workforce

The Animation Guild, IATSE Local 839 · Sep 2024

Key points

  1. Projects around 21 per cent of US film, TV and animation jobs consolidated or replaced by AI by 2026.
  2. 75 per cent of surveyed members report AI had already reduced or consolidated jobs in their division.
  3. Identifies entry-level animation positions as the most exposed, with equity implications for new graduates.

Summary

Published in September 2024, this Animation Guild report is the most-cited quantitative source for animation AI labour claims. It projects significant job displacement by 2026, with entry-level roles identified as the most vulnerable. The report carries forward the January 2024 Goldsmiths study's 21 per cent projection -- the earlier study is absorbed under the durability supersession rule, as this TAG report is the more authoritative and widely circulated form of the same core finding. The data is directly relevant to career teaching in animation HE programs and to curriculum conversations about the value of foundational skills.
