Ottawa International Animation Festival 2026: eligibility rule on AI-assisted and AI-generated work

Ottawa International Animation Festival · Mar 2026

Key points

  1. Submitted works must be original with some level of non-algorithmic human involvement; AI-assisted works should at least show some sign of the artists' hand.
  2. Works that are fully AI-generated are not eligible and will be disqualified; repackaging other people's films as your own is grounds for immediate disqualification.
  3. The rule sits in the submissions FAQ and entry rules for the festival's 50th edition (23 to 27 September 2026) and applies across the competition.

Summary

The Ottawa International Animation Festival's 2026 submission rules set out the plainest statement yet from a mainstream animation festival on where AI sits. In the festival's own wording, "Submitted works must be original, and have some level of (non-algorythmic) human involvement in their creation"; "While we are not opposed to AI-assisted works, submissions should at least show some sign of the artists' hand"; and "Submitted works that are fully AI-generated are not eligible and will be disqualified." Entries opened on 1 March 2026 with a 2 June deadline, and the 50th edition runs 23 to 27 September 2026. Because student films reach festivals as a matter of course, a festival's eligibility standard is, in practice, a standard that student work is assessed against, and "some sign of the artists' hand" is a usable line for degree shows and assessment briefs.

Implications for animation education

For programs that push student films to festivals, this is now the standard the work is judged against at one of the field's principal competitions: an AI-assisted film is eligible if the artist's hand is visible in it, and a fully AI-generated film is not. Course leads can lift the wording directly into degree-show and assessment briefs as an eligibility test, and use it in teaching to draw the line between assisted and generated work in the terms a festival jury will apply. The rule is short and lives in an FAQ rather than a formal policy document, so it may change between editions; check the current year's entry rules before quoting it to students.
